Josh Petherick

Josh Petherick is an illustrator and graphic artist based in Melbourne, Australia. Born in 1979, Josh grew up in the Adelaide hills. This environment no doubt led to an infatuation with the natural world, mythology, punk rock and (thankfully) drawing.

Since he discovered the work of Richard Scarry as a child, coupled with his father’s vintage MAD Magazine collection, Josh has drawn obsessively.

Shy by nature, illustration for Josh has always been a therapeutic form of “visual rambling”; a stream of thoughts, stories and ideas that reflect his life, his sense of humour, his observations and the music he immerses himself in everyday.

Today Josh lives and works in Melbourne, Victoria with his cat Mingus. He divides time in his studio between preparing for exhibitions and working as a graphic artist for folks such as Commonwealth Stacks, 2K by Gingham, Chapter Records, Stussy, Nieves Books, Sony, Vitra and Tokion Magazine, amongst many others.

As an exhibiting artist, Josh’s work takes the form of everything from large printed wall-hangings, watercolour paintings, cushions, posters, intricate technicolour pencil and texta drawings, hand-crafted wooden bongs, and large plush and wood installations. Josh’s long list of inspiration includes chihuahuas, psychedelic rock, folklore, Woody Allen and summertime. Some day he hopes to focus his entire energy on making children’s books and live in a tree house.
