Issue Fifty

It’s been a whirlwind month at Via Alley. With the new graniph store opening, more Surface2Air arriving plus jewellery and cameras galore we are almost craving a little down time (ideally in the company of Nieves or a Nagi Noda GASBOOK!)

To help us all kick our feet up, we have 10 double passes to give away to Sidney Lumet's Before The Devil Knows You're Dead. Starring the likes of Albert Finney, Ethan Hawke and Philip Seymore Hoffman, the film tells the story of two brothers robbing their parent's jewellery store. 'High powered drama' doesn’t come close to describing this one!

In other news, you might have noticed that Via Alley has indulged in that great social site called Facebook. If you enjoy a bit of Facebooking, we’d love you to join our group so that we can talk to you, share our pics and keep you in the know about the creative flow at VA.

Be the first 10 to win by emailing scott@viaalley.com with the subject "The devil knows you did it!"

Julie Verhoeven

Julie Verhoeven could be the best thing to come out of 1969 (even better than the moon landing....maybe). She is, of course, an illustrator, but to single her out as just an illustrator is unfair. The artist has worked in several design fields such as fashion and textiles, patterns, sewing, accessories and clothing design. So without further ado, the story of Julie Verhoeven begins...

Julie was passionate about fashion from very early on, and was heavily influenced by her parents who were also both designers. After graduating with a diploma in fashion from Medway College in Rochester, England, Julie sought out work placement with John Galliano. This led to four years of invaluable experience in the field. From there, Julie focused on her fashion illustration, undertaking commissioned work and also teaching a course. An unfortunate lack of commissions lead to a fortunate placing with Martine Sitbon in Paris, and from there her career skyrocketed.

Verhoeven possesses an amazing ability to incorporate minimal colour and linework into very detailed and expressive illustrative works. At first glance her style can appear sloppy, but upon further investigation it’s revealed as amazingly accurate. For other work across advertising, Julie has also incorporated collage. She’s continued to use this technique across various projects. When illustrating fashion, she has the knack of capturing everything about a subject. Somehow with a few lines and blotches of colour Julie can recreate on paper the exact mood and attitude of both a model and garment.

It is this uncanny ability that has lead Julie Verhoeven to be commissioned for art exhibitions, CD covers and music videos. Perhaps one of her most famous projects was a collaboration with GIBO's (a clothing manufacturer’s) in-house fashion label.

On top of that, any Primal Scream fan will be familiar with the cover of Some Velvet Morning featuring Kate Moss, which Julie can be held accountable for.

In 2002 she collaborated with Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton to produce handbags and purses, and more recently in 2007 Julie was targeted by Mulberry to revamp the classic British label and give it a new feel.

She is also included in a book packed-full of illustrations (which we're yet to get our greasy mits on) titled Fat Bottomed Girls. If any readers happen to be the lucky owners of a copy, please bring it in store, we're dying to see it!

Nieves - old and new
Doing a gem of a job far, far away in Zurich, Switzerland, the gang at Nieves is responsible for some of the best art books and zines around. VA is proud to welcome back some classic Nieves publications such as Takashi Homma's Tokyo and My Daughter, Geoff McFetridge's Bend the Void and Stefan Marx's latest titles. As well, we introduce Death Jukebox, bound to be a hit with those who enjoyed Death Disco. For other new titles, check out the VA bookstore.
S2A - shoes are go
French label Surface2Air have dropped a clothing artillery on Via Alley. Late last week we received a limited run of super-soft tees, pants, thick cotton hoodies, dresses, singlets and bomber jackets – wow! Then there are the shoes! Made from a mix of high quality leather and canvas, these kicks are made for both work and play. Deciding between the high-top 'mountain sneakers', 'two tone' kicks and 'classic blue mesh' is wonderful torture.
Mogu - books and bags
Back by popular demand, Mogu's soft wax paper notebooks and hardcover books are in store. You can’t be stuck for inspiration when cradling one of these papered beauties. To hold your books and more, Mogu have also released some seriously cool canvas 'school bags'. Made to handle everything from uni books to briefs, they come in grey/blue or purple to suit your style.
Holga - snap attack
The VA crew are excited about late March. One, because it's the chocolate season. And two, because we're getting more cameras. Hopefully before the bunny gets here we’ll have more Baby Holgas, more Sister Holgas, more Golden Half(s) and more surprises! Keep your eyes on the website and in-store to snap one up.
Iggy & Lou Lou - classic pieces
Iggy & Lou Lou's limited edition jewellery range and homeware collections draw on the rich history of porcelain. Each piece is lovingly hand crafted and kiln fired up to four times to attain the patina of buried treasure. Based in Melbourne, the label’s pieces can now be found in some of the coolest boutiques in Japan. They also have recently collaborated with Aussie cult icon, P.A.M. We are super excited that Iggy & Lou Lou have decided to re-release some of their most loved pieces, such as the 'Bambi' and 'bird pendant' necklaces. Don't miss out this time!
