Yoo

Happy Easter! Well, in three weeks time. As you can read, the VA team is eagerly anticipating the chocolate season, especially as we are receiving a new Q-Pot drop next month (this season’s theme is ‘Chocolate’). It seems that this time of year our eyes are bigger than our stomachs, which is a good thing as there is so much to see. In store now we have Medicom Galore! Including Pierre by Genevieve Gauckler, a hairy but cute addition to the VA family. We also have a Bearbrick bonanza of sorts on our hands. Checkout Leilow and Shag and the 5 Piece BWWT Bearbrick Set. To top that off, VA is looking after a rainbow of Baby Holgas, which take fantastic Holga snaps and (as Jane discovered) look pretty cute as a necklace to boot.
In the Gallery our eyes are feasting too. This month Scott profiles mastermind Japan, a super cool Japanese label that will blow your mind away.
Changes are in the air at VA and hopefully we get our acts together to bring you a cooler, funkier, and better VA Tribute next time round.
Cheerios.
Ben, Jane, Nadia, Scott & Wing
xoxo

mastermind Japan

How do you write about a label that is notorious for laying low and keeping everything super top secret? That's pretty much what I asked myself when I was asked to write about "MASTERMIND JAPAN". And to be honest I am still trying to figure out how to approach it, but I guess a good way to start would be with a bit of history.
Although initially founded in 1997 by outstandingly talented Masaaki Honma, the Mastermind label launched its first season in 1999, focusing only on menswear. The style was and has remained a fresh take on punk subculture, a style which is greatly enhanced by the Mastermind skull and cross bones logo. Since about 2003, a womens line has been gradually introduced, with the number of items for women slowly increasing with each collection. The thing about Mastermind though, is that the clothes that come from the label are treated more like artworks in the fashion world than wearable items. It's more common for people to frame their T-Shirts than wear them, which isn't so surprising when you consider how much a Mastermind item is.
The quality of Mastermind products, and of course the grunge punk coolness of their designs are what made them so highly sought after. Additionally, every collection has a tiny, tiny production run making it incredibly difficult to attain, and it is these factors combined that has seen the transformation of Mastermind from standard clothing, to artwork status. The result of this transformation is a major factor in why every item is so pricey. To give you an idea, Mastermind T-Shirts range from around $300 to $1500 and appreciate over time - eek!
Of course such a distinguished label just begs for collaboration. If you wanted to, you could get yourself a nice pair of Mastermind X Visvims, or a skinny tie emblazoned with a swarovski crystal skull. For you girls though, my pick of the bunch is this bag, which i have an inkling might just be a collaboration with Goyard....it'll cost you a bit more than an LV though!
Oh! And this years Spring/Summer 2008 season marks Masterminds 10th anniversary, so if you wanna kick off your collection, now might be a good time!
At VA we're pretty chuffed to have a 1000% (aka huge) gold chrome Mastermind Be@rbrick - sporting a silver skull and cross bones across the belly. So to the be@rbrick die-hard, you may want to check this out!
