Via Alley is the result of an admiration for artists/designers who are proud of who they are, passionate about what they do, who are talented and are willing to give it their all to fulfil a dream. We import things we like from other parts of the world, and in most cases, inaccessible in Australia.

We specialize in publishing small, low-run artist books that feature the work of both emerging and established artists, always working one-on-one with the artists to create a publication that evokes the very essence of the artist’s focus. This intimate process, coupled with Hassla’s simple aesthetic, allows for an interior view into the artist’s work.

Hassla Books was founded January 2007 in Amherst, New Hampshire by David Schoerner. The first publication was released in March, 2007. Hassla is now located in New York City.

173 people lost their lives in the devastating bushfires that ravaged 51 townships. Over 5,000 homes, schools and businesses were destroyed. Up to 400 fires were recorded on that Saturday, a day now known as Black Saturday.

As the dying embers turned to ash, photographer Billy Law visited the affected areas between Marysville and Kinglake, equipped with a camera, a helium gas tank and a handful of red balloons. Over 5 days, Billy witnessed first-hand the extent of the bushfire damage. He also spent time with locals, finding the people behind the ashes, listening to their stories, and inspired by their bravery in the distress situation.

By reviving the charcoal and desolate landscapes with a single red balloon, Billy hopes this collection of medium format photographs capture the impact of the tragedy, and also convey the overriding sense of hope amidst the scenes of blackened ruin.

The red balloon is a poignant symbol of dreams, hope and courage. This photographic exhibition is a tribute to those who lost their lives in the bushfires.

The Red Balloon is Billy’s first solo photographic exhibition.

Be sure not to miss a special Q&A Session with artists Billy Law and Anna Warr at 1pm Sunday 21 June.

16-27 June 2009
The Depot Gallery II
2 Danks Street Gallery

Acne was created in 1996 by four creatives and the initial idea was to build brands, their own as well as others’, within the fields of fashion, entertainment and technology. Although all members of the collective are independent entities acting in their own right in various fields of creativity, they all share the same vision and culture. This vision combines art and industry in equal measures, whether this is through clothing, film, printed matter or a global advertising campaign. Today, Acne is as multi-disciplinary as when it started with ACNE Film, ACNE Advertising, ACNE Digital, ACNE Paper and ACNE JR.

Via Alley is proud to introduce ACNE JR down under. ACNE JR develops and produces, character-based toys and concepts. The first product is Chester, a teddy bear, which is available in the materials vinyl and leather. We are told that Chester will be shortly joined by many other friends. Can’t wait.

Together they have fused their backgrounds from fashion, video performing and graphic design to create popupshop, a modern clothing brand passionate about making stylish and quality basics with a focus on sustainability.

The popupshop collection is made from organic cotton and they all share the common aesthetic of a classic and easy-to-wear design. Each piece of clothing is timeless, and thereby easily combined with other styles. The collections consist of a year-round line of basics and seasonal designs.
